Solar system maintenance basics

Solar systems have no big moving parts, but they live outdoors. A few habits keep them performing.

3 min read · All guides

What can reduce output

  • Dust, dirt and bird droppings on the panels.
  • New shade from trees or buildings.
  • Loose or corroded connections.
  • An inverter fault or error message.
  • Ageing batteries in hybrid systems.

Simple things you can do

  • Check your inverter or monitoring app regularly. A sudden drop in daily production is worth investigating.
  • Keep trees trimmed so they do not shade the panels.
  • Have panels cleaned when they are visibly dirty, using a method suited to your roof. Do not walk on a roof or work at height unsafely.

Leave to a technician

  • Anything involving wiring, the inverter or battery cabinets.
  • Fault codes that do not clear.
  • Physical damage after a storm.
  • Periodic inspection of mounting, cabling and connections.

Warranties

Warranty terms come from the equipment manufacturers and your installation agreement, and they differ between products. Keep your documents and ask what maintenance is required to keep a warranty valid.
